He Came In First

It was Physical Education Class
They were meeting at the track
The boy hid in the crowd
Tried crouching down in back

On the cinder track were hurdles
Something that he couldn’t do
Being shy and uncoordinated
How to do it? He had no clue

The teacher searched, spotted him
Told him that it was his turn
He lined up with the other boys
The whistle blew, his legs churned

The first hurdle in front of him
He stopped, climbed over it
His classmates laughed at him
His teacher was having a fit

Round the corner, on he ran
From his teacher expected the worse
On the teacher’s face was a smile
Somehow he came in first
