The Flag

IT’S BEEN SPAT ON, CURSED AND BURNED
TRAMPLED ROUGHSHOD, RIPPED TO SHREDS
DISHONORED, SHAMED, RIDICULED, DESPISED
BUT TO IT I WILL PROUDLY LIFT MY HEAD

TO SOME IT'S JUST SOME COLORED CLOTH
FASTENED ATOP A SLENDER, LONELY POLE
FOR OTHERS IT MEANS SO MUCH MORE
IT'S THE ESSENCE OF OUR COUNTRY’S SOUL

IT BEGAN WITH JUST THIRTEEN STARS
WAVING DEFIANT FOR THE WORLD TO SEE
PROCLAIMING A NEWBORN FREEDOM
FOR A FLEDGLING NATION IN ITS INFANCY

IT HAS PROUDLY WAVED IN WAR AND PEACE
A SYMBOL THAT WE ARE FOREVER FREE
IT HAS FLOWN IN GOOD TIMES AND BAD
AND IT FOREVER STANDS FOR OUR LIBERTY

WHEN IT’S UNFURLED AND THE ANTHEM PLAYS
I’VE WATCHED GROWN MEN STAND AND CRY
REMEMBERING THE ONES WHO WILLINGLY
ENDURED THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE AND DIED

HOW COMPLACENT WE ALL HAVE BECOME
TAKING FOR GRANTED WHERE WE LIVE
FORGETTING THE BLOOD SHED BY THOSE
FOR WHOSE COUNTRY THEIR LIFE WOULD GIVE

OLD GLORY, SHE STILL PROUDLY WAVES
PLEASE GIVE HER THE RESPECT SHE’S DUE
AND PRAY FOR AND SUPPORT OUR TROOPS
WILLING TO DIE FOR ME AND FOR YOU
